Born: March 19, 1971, in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales
Growing up in South Wales Julien Macdonald became interested in design after his mum taught him to knit. He toyed with idea of becoming a dancer, but eventually plumped for a career in fashion, studying textiles in Brighton and going on to earn an MA from the Royal College of Art.
He'd only just graduated when he was snapped up by Karl Lagerfeld to work for Chanel. As a freelancer, he also created knitwear for Alexander McQueen.
At the turn of the millennium he was appointed chief designer for Givenchy in Paris.
Julien received an OBE from the Queen in 2006.
