Born: 1970 in Darlington, County Durham
Giles Deacon was born in County Durham but raised in the Lake District until the age of 14 by his homemaker mum and agricultural worker dad. "It was lovely," he says. "Right in the middle of nowhere. I spent all my time outside."
He drew from an early age and went on do a foundation course at Harrogate College of Arts, where he found the fashion element to be the "most fun" part of the course. Moving to London to take up a place at Central Saint Martins in the late Eighties he met Katie Grand, the influential stylist with whom he struck up a relationship.
After graduating he designed for a number of big names, including Gucci and Louis Vuitton, before launching his own label, Giles, in 2003. Two years on the northerner was named fashion designer of the year at the British Fashion Awards, an honour previously earned by the likes of John Galliano and Vivienne Westwood.
