Born: April 8, 1941, in Glossop, Derbyshire For nearly 40 years Vivienne Westwood has set the benchmark when it comes to alternative British design.
She was aged 24 and already had a child, Benjamin, by ex-husband Derek Westwood when she met her 18-year-old future design partner Malcolm McLaren- with whom she had a second son, Joseph.
Vivienne and Malcolm opened a shop together called, initially, Let it Rock. The store went through various name changes including Sex and World’s End, which remains its name today.
Her first collection debuted at Olympia in 1981 and she showed in Paris the following year - the first British designer to do so since Mary Quant. In 1989 Vivienne was listed as one of the six most influential designers in the world and earned the title British designer of the year in both 1990 and 1992. Today there are over 100 Vivienne Westwood stores around the world, with outlets in Italy, Russia, Japan, Korea and China.
