Ever wondered what it's like to be a model at London Fashion Week? With up to 20 castings per day, hundreds of outfit changes and lots of walking, it can be quite manic.
Sosheba Griffiths, a Jamaican model who has walked for Vivienne Westwood and Philip Treacy (pictured below), and British beauty Siobhan Perry, who has taken to the runway for Pam Hogg and William Tempest, took time out of their hectic, pre-LFW schedule to share their fashion week experiences exclusively with HELLO! Online.
"Backstage is where the action is! There is a real buzz and it's great for girl chats with my model friends and the hair and make-up artists. There are also lots of photographers taking your picture for beauty stories and first looks… It's also the perfect opportunity to grab some lunch!
My favourite part of LFW is definitely when one of my bookers at my agency Premier confirms me on a big show – then I am happy! But it can get a little crazy – show venues and castings are so spread apart and the running around can leave you stressed, but there is such a great ambiance and London designers are so creative!
My top tip for preparing and surviving fashion week is to get lots of sleep before the shows start and also to eat healthily and hit the gym to keep fit. I always carry Compeed blister packs in my handbag which help me to survive the week, as well as a survival kit that Bliss Spa sends us at the start of the season.
I find castings quite fun as I get to see my model friends. Over the shows it's a bit like the first day back at school – catching up and having a good gossip with the girls. Castings can be quite tiring though, as there is a lot of running around, having to read maps and queues.
"Before London Fashion Week, I usually go shopping to buy some new high heels and tight-fitting clothes for castings, not to mention flats, which make running to and from the castings a bit easier. I also start eating a lot healthier and exercise more!
London Fashion Week is amazing – I love it. My favourite part is getting to the shows and being the first to wear the exciting, new clothes. But, as you can imagine, it can all get very stressful! The worst part has to be my hair and skin getting damaged from having my hair and make-up changed so many times throughout the week.
If I'm not busy, I sometimes drop into a fashion party or the designer's aftershow party, although I can never stay long as my days during the show period start very early. After LFW, usually it's straight on to Milan, but if not I have a chance to rest before heading to Paris."
Backstage is so much fun! Everyone gets to the job 2-3 hours before and get hair and make-up rehearsals and fittings done. Ten minutes before the show, we all get into our first looks and are lined up. It's so exciting the feeling you get walking onto the runway – there is a real adrenaline rush!
I get to attend a few fashion week parties but only if it's the last show of the day. I also get to go to my agency, Premier Model Management's party which is always a lot of fun!
After LFW, I sleep!"
